Hononegah alumnus and Kentucky long-snapper Kelly Mason signed with the Washington Redskins as an undrafted free agent following the conclusion of the 2016 NFL Draft. He will attend the team's rookie mini-camp after a four-year career with the Wildcats as the team's long-snapping specialist.
Mason spent his junior and senior seasons with the Indians as their long-snapper prior to his collegiate career. Now he has the opportunity to continue playing professionally. He spoke to the 13 Sports Authority by phone on Sunday, and is excited for his chance in Washington.
"I'm excited to go out there and see what I got against the best in the business," Mason said. "They don't get much more bigger, stronger, and athletic in the NFL. I'm excited to see how I compare to those guys and see what I can do at that level and under that kind of pressure. Long-snapping is the only position where perfection is the standard, you mess up once and your career is over, but you can be the guy and be there a really long time if you're good."
