An accident at the Winnebago County Landfill left one man dead on Thursday. One day later his wife speaks out.
According to the Winnebago County Coroner's Office, 54-year-old Gonzalo Trevino died of blunt force trauma to his chest and abdomen after being crushed by concrete debris that fell on him from a semi-truck's dump trailer.
According to Winnebago County Sheriff Deputy Chief Dominick Barcellona, two separate trucks were involved in the accident. "One of the individuals was out of his truck not really sure what he was doing, but he was next to his truck, dumping his load. The other was a semi with a trailer dump trailer was next to him and the bed was extended, dropping his load, and it ended up tipping over."
According to Trevino's wife Tina Trevino, he worked for works for Marengo Disposal Company. It remains unclear which company the semi belongs to, and who that driver is. The sheriff's office says no charges have been filed, and the incident is still under investigation.
According to the New Milford Fire Department, Trevino was buried for roughly an hour before crews were able to reach him.
Now Trevino's wife is speaking out with her frustrations.
"My heart is hurting very much," says Trevino. "The only thing I'm asking from the trucker and the trucking outfit and Winnebago County Landfill is an apology. I'll accept their apology. You made a mistake. You took a man that has a family of six. You took a man who has grandchildren of eight."
13 News has reached out to Marengo Disposal Company for a comment, but has not yet received response. Trevino says MDC has reached out to her, offering to help cover the cost of funeral expenses.
