The music mogul Prince has died in his suburban Minneapolis home. He was 57.
His publicist confirmed his death Thursday with the Associated Press. NBC reports that a week earlier the 57-year-old made an emergency landing in Illinois where he was hospitalized for what was described as the flu. According to CNN, the singer wasn't feeling well earlier this month, and had canceled several performances.
Well known for his Oscar Winning song score for the movie Purple Rain, Prince has won seven Grammy Awards, earned 30 Grammy nominations and was featured in the Super Bowl XLI Halftime Show.
Area police told the Associated press that Prince was found in an elevator unresponsive in his compound. First responders tried CPR but were ultimately could not revive the singer.
Hundreds of fans have gathered outside the home to mourn Prince's death, and a flood of reactions and condolences are coming in from fellow stars and performers.
