Jefferson High School will host the "Coach Up" Girls Basketball Showcase on April 30 for local high school basketball talent to put their skills on display for collegiate scouts.
Antwon Harris, assistant basketball coach for the Highland Lady Cougars, is one of the primary organizers of the event. Seeing local products Sophie Brunner (Arizona State via Aquin) and Brea Edwards (MTSU via Boylan and Hononegah) succeed at the NCAA level gives Harris plenty of optimism that giving female players the opportunity to showcase their talent will lead to more success in the collegiate ranks
"We will highlight our girls basketball players in this area, student athletes that want the opportunity to go on and play college basketball. We have some going on to play right now but for those that are unsigned and who want to go and have an opportunity, we want to have that available to them. Have a bunch of college coaches come in and evaluate their talents," Harris said.
Reflecting on Brunner and Edwards, Harris added, "we want to get more girls like that around from this area because there is talent. I think having a showcase like this, we put that talent on display, and more girls that get opportunity and we get more student athletes that want to play basketball."
Registration for the Showcase at Jefferson ends on April 27.
