The Winnebago County Sheriff's Police is warning of a new phone scam targeted at local residents.
The sheriff's office says a resident recently received a phone call from an unknown person claiming to represent the Winnebago County Recorder's office.
Police say the caller informed the resident that he owed the recorder's office unpaid taxes and fees from previous years. The caller then asked the resident to pay money over the phone.
The recorder's officer does not contact local residents asking for unpaid taxes and fees over the phone, according to the sheriff's office. Residents who receive a similar call should report it to their local police agency.
