After tossing the first complete game of his career, striking out a career-high six batters and leading the NIU baseball team to a 6-1 victory over Miami (Ohio) Sunday afternoon, sophomore Donovin Sims (Hononegah) was named the Mid-American Conference’s West Division Pitcher of the Week.
Sims is the first Huskie to pick up a Pitcher of the Week honor in 2016 but joins Justin Fletcher and Brian Sisler on the MAC’s weekly honor roll as the two were named Player of the Week on Feb. 29 and March 15, respectively.
The Roscoe native hurled 106 pitches, tallying 68 strikes (64.1 percent) as he totaled six strikeouts with only one walk in his 9.0 innings of work. He retired his first six batters and was hitless in his first four innings on the mound. Sims scattered seven hits in the contest, including two in the final inning, when Miami scored its lone run of the game.
As a starter in the Huskies weekend rotation this season, Sims is 3-0 in three starts this season as he has totaled 23.1 innings on the mound in a starters role. Boasting an opponents batting average of .212, the sophomore has sported a walks/hits per inning average of 0.95, striking out 14 while walking only four. He also currently dons a 1.16 ERA as a starter with a 4.06 clip in nine appearances in 2016.
