Rockford church connects community with local resources

The hunt for information was on at a Rockford school on Saturday.

More than a dozen local agencies were all under one roof at Washington Academy on Saturday. Community activists put together an event for residents to find services that aim to improve their lives.

"Rockford isn't as much divided as it is disconnected, so we try to find whatever way we can to connect resources to people who need those resources," said Pastor K. Edward Copeland of New Zion Baptist Church.

Families learned more about programs available through these groups, including mentoring, free tutoring, adoption and foster care. Tips for new home-buyers. Plus dental care and sports teams while the grown ups chat with agency reps kids go on an Easter-themed treasure hunt set up by New Zion Baptist Church.

"We're just trying to be innovative in ways that we try to bring our community together," said Pastor Copeland. "Lots of people want to talk about Rockford, but very few want to actually get out and do something that's practical."

The church says it plans to host other events like this in the future.
