Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner is pushing for the approval of a proposed bill that would provide extra funds to repair and maintain the state fairgrounds in Springfield and Duquoin.
A bill in both the House and Senate would create a foundation that allows businesses and private donors to support and maintain both fairgrounds.
Rauner says the states surrounding Illinois have similar foundations that have benefited their fairgrounds facilities.
"We are the headquarters for agriculture in America, we have outstanding agriculture businesses headquartered in Illinois, and you know where they're donatin' a lot of their money for fairgrounds? Is to those other states," Rauner said.
Currently, both locations in Illinois have more than $180 million in deferred maintenance costs.
