Some people in Loves Park are getting notices that radium in their water exceeds maximum levels.
The notice is arriving attached to water bills. It says the maximum level for radium in water is 5 pico curies per liter. Tests back in December showed the water was at 6 pico curies.
The notice goes on to say drinking water with excessive amounts of radium over many years can increase some people's chances for cancer. WREX reached out to Loves Park about the notice, and Public Works Director Dan Jacobson said there is no safety issue with the levels found in Loves Park's water, and that it is safe to drink.
The City is treating the water to get it back to acceptable levels.
