Michael Leighton was recalled to the Chicago Blackhawks this week as a backup goaltender to Scott Darling as Corey Crawford recovers from an injury, but prior to Sunday's game at United Center against the Wild, Leighton was honored by the Rockford IceHogs in a pregame ceremony.
Leighton set the AHL's all-time shutout record earlier this season with the 46th of his career, and his family joined him on the ice as the IceHogs celebrated the milestone. A tribute video, including Blackhawks Conn Smythe Trophy-winning defenseman Duncan Keith, was played. AHL President Dave Andrews and Blackhawks Senior VP of Hockey Operations Al MacIsaac made presentations. Teammates Jake Dowell and Pierre-Cedric Labrie also participated.
When the puck dropped, a nasty affair ensued with plenty of hard hits, dropped gloves, and penalty mintues. The Wolves emerged victorious in a 4-3 overtime victory. The IceHogs are back in action Sunday afternoon for Star Wars Night against Charlotte in downtown Rockford. The uniforms will be made available for auction after the game.
