Angel Rodriguez took over after Miami blew a 21-point lead midway through the second half, hitting a big 3-pointer with 72 second remaining and scoring 28 points to lead the third-seeded Hurricanes over Wichita State 65-57 on Saturday to advance to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.
Fred VanVleet and Shaquille Morris had 12 points and Ron Baker 11 for Wichita State (26-9), which put on a furious rally in the second half of a bruising game, taking a 43-42 lead with 10:24 to go.
VanVleet, already Wichita State's career assist leader, had four steals for 225, a new Shockers record. VanVleet needed a win for his 121st, which would have been a school and conference record.
The Rockford Auburn alumnus and Forest City product leaves the program with more than 1,400 career points, and never missed the NCAA Tournament in his four years with Wichita State. That includes a 2013 Final Four, a 2014 season that featured just one loss all year, and a 2015 campaign that sent the Shockers to the Sweet 16.
