Teacher of the Week: Lindsay Johnson of CICS Jackson Charter School

A Jackson Charter School Kindergarten classroom has its walls covered with charts and materials for learning. The room was decorated by CICS Jackson Charter Kindergarten Teacher Lindsay Johnson, but it is her innovative ideas that keep students engaged.

"One of my first goals as a teacher at the beginning of the year is to create a classroom that is comfortable and safe feeling for the students that come here,"  Johnson said.

School Assistant Director Autumn Elrod nominated Johnson for WREX's Teacher of the Week. Elrod said Johnson spends extra time crafting exercises for students to meet their individual learning needs, including using song and dance as a teaching tool.

"When I see that light bulb go off in their head they just get so excited when they learn new things," Johnson said.

Johnson started at CICS 3 years ago.  School Director Angelique Watson says she saw a spark in Johnson from the first interview.

"She was phenomenal and I knew she was someone we needed on our team to help have a major impact on student learning," Watson said.

She said Johnson had a natural gift to connect with the students. She also provides them with resources to accomplish their goals, preparing them for the next level of education.

"She lets me go to first grade for math," Kindergarten student Benjamin Prochnicki said.

Johnson still has the same enthusiasm she started with, according to Watson. That enthusiasm has led Jackson to become a mentor to her fellow teachers. She recommends teachers use students that perform well to help others, and to try to cherish their time as educators.

"Enjoy what you do, because this is what we went to college for."
