Tricia Smith wins Republican nomination for Boone County State's Attorney
BOONE COUNTY (WREX) -
In a close race, Tricia Smith has won the Republican nomination for the Boone County State's Attorney. The race was highly contested between incumbent Michelle Courier and challenger Smith.
Courier was the first female elected as state's attorney for Boone County, serving two terms (so far). In 2009, Courier successfully sued the Latin Kings gang with more than 30 known members in Belvidere and the surrounding county. Courier says she will continue to aggressively prosecute drug dealers and child predators in the County.
Smith is an attorney with experience as an assistant state's attorney and public defender, as well as a police officer. Smith also served on the Boone County Board, and currently works as an attorney in criminal cases. Smith says she will focus on the increase of gang crimes in the count and promises to work with local law enforcement to "bring efficiency to the office."
