Tuskegee Airmen honored at Veteran's Memorial Hall for Black History Month
ROCKFORD (WREX) -
In recognition of Black History Month, many gathered Saturday to honor several African American veterans.
Three Tuskegee Airmen were honored Saturday afternoon at Veteran's Memorial Hall in downtown Rockford. Also honored was Thomas Jarrett, a World War II veteran and a Rockford resident. The Black History Month committee has been hosting this event since 2008, and they said they feel its important to pay respect to those men that fought for the country.
"Whenever you can get a group of fellas like that together, especially in the era that they performed, it's history," said L.C. Wilson, a Winnebago County Board Member and the event coordinator.
There will be another presentation Sunday, Feb. 21 for Montford Point Marines and Vietnam veterans from 1 to 4 p.m. Admission is $5, and is free to students and those over 65 years of age.
