Girls Basketball Championship Thursday

It was a packed Thursday night of playoff basketball in the Rockford region as local girls hoops teams continued their postseason push with sectional and regional championships.

Byron advanced to the 2-A Super-Sectional, beating Big Northern West rival Winnebago 70-32 on the Lady Tigers' home court. Byron will play in the Elite Eight against Peoria Christian this Monday night at Monmouth College with a trip to the 2-A state semifinals on the line.

The 3-A bracket featured Boylan and Lutheran both advancing to the Rochelle sectional. The Lady Titans received a 19-point night effort from Sarah Welsh and 16 points from Jessie Schiro in a 58-55 victory over Hampshire in the Belvidere regional final. The Lady Crusaders defeated Big Northern West rival Stillman Valley 54-37 in the Rock Falls regional final. Should Boylan and Lutheran both win their sectional semifinals next week, they would play each other in an all-Rockford sectional championship.

The 4-A ranks brought Hononegah and Harlem together for an all-NIC-10 regional final at East High School, with the Lady Indians beating the Lady Huskies, 60-50. Hononegah put all five starters in double figures on the scoring sheet and now advances to the DeKalb sectional next week. Auburn's season came to an end in the Belvidere North regional final, as Huntley defeated the Lady Knights, 66-40.
