UPDATE: Driver killed in E. State St. crash named

UPDATE: The Winnebago County Coroner's Office releases the name of the Rockford man who died in a car crash Saturday.

31-year-old Drew Gates died at the scene just before noon.

Police are still investigating what caused the crash and details are limited, but officers say that a car traveling on East State Street crossed the center lanes and struck another car head on.  It's unclear which car Gates was driving.

Traffic had to be rerouted to other streets, which caused backups and even other smaller accidents.

Rockford Fire reported at least two other crashes on Newburg Rd. and Easton Pkwy. as well as East Lawn and Chalet Ct.

There are few details being released. Rockford Fire said there were serious, but non-life threatening injuries involved in the Newburg Rd. accident.

No one was badly hurt at East Lawn and Chalet Ct.

A serious crash has shut down portions of E. State Street in both directions and is expected to remain closed over the next several hours.

Rockford Police say the road is shut down from Flintridge to New Towne and that motorists should find an alternate route around the area.  Suggested routes are Guilford and Newburg roads.

Rockford University has been forced to shut down its main entrance to campus, so if you need to access the university you are advised to use Turner Street off of N. Alpine.

WREX has a crew at the scene and we will continue to provide updates as soon as we get them.
