Three local girls basketball teams advanced to the sectional round of the IHSA postseason on Thursday, winning regional championships and continuing their playoff pursuit of a berth at ISU down state.
In the 1-A ranks, Lena-Winslow defeated Aquin 53-45 in Lena to win the crown. Kenzie Temperly (22 points) and Nicole Moest (18 points) paced the Lady Panthers as they clinch a spot in the Eastland sectional. They'll face the winner of Friday's Stockton-Galena regional final.
The 2-A Byron sectional will feature two Big Northern West teams in next week's semifinals. Byron defeated Fulton 70-32 behind 20 points from Lexi DeVries. The Lady Tigers will play McNamara from Kankakee, with the winner of that game playing Winnebago or Hall from Spring Valley.
The Lady Indians won their first regional title in a decade, grabbing the Poplar Grove crown with a 51-41 victory over Morrison. Kiah Garrigan (19 points) and Alyssa Thompson (18 points) lead the way for Winnebago into the sectional semifinals.
