BYRON (WREX) -

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission says they have approved the renewal application for the Byron Generating Station. The approval follows a rigorous, multi-year process.

The Byron Station is split into two Units: Unit 1 is cleared to operate until 2044, and Unit 2 is cleared to operate until 2046 under the renewal.

“The community has benefited from our partnership with Exelon Generation and the license renewal for Byron Station is a positive for the entire region,” said Chris Millard, mayor of the city of Byron. “Many people rely on the economic activity the station’s large employee base brings to the area, and we hope the facility continues to operate for another generation of Northern Illinois residents.”

The Byron Station supplies about 5,100 jobs to the area, contributing about $1.7 billion to the state's economy annually, according to plant officials.

Officials say the license renewal is not a guarantee for the station to operate for the next 20 years. Exelon announced in September that it will defer any decisions about future operations of Byron Station for a year.
