It was a jam-packed Saturday of high school sports Fall playoffs in the Rockford region as local athletes played for state titles, state final appearances, and conference championships.
Harlem High School hosted the girls tennis sectional finals. Boylan sophomore Ana Hatfield defeated Lutheran sophomore Kaitlyn Larson in the singles title match in straight sets to advance to state. The doubles title match featured Guilford pair Carly Kasicki and Nicole Christiansen winning in straight sets against Auburn's Meghan Mediratta and Emma Lai. Hononegah won the team sectional title.
Rockford University hosted the NIC-10 cross country meet for the conference's championship. The top four finishers in the girls race were Boylan's Delaney Appino, Belvidere North's Jenna Lutzow, Boylan's Grace McLaughlin, and Belvidere North's Sabrina Elder, who ran the final mile with just one shoe. The top four runners in the boys meet were North's Eryk Yunk, Nick Licari and Jared Ellingson (1st, 2nd, 4th), and Hononegah's Nick Licari in 3rd.
The Byron boys golf team, comprised of Connor Hurd, Trent Snodgrass, Carter Bukoski, Jon Silvers, Will Beesing, and Drew Morgan, won the 1A state championship on Saturday by 13 strokes. Hurd and Snodgrass placed fourth and fifth individually.
Madasyn Pettersen, the 2014 Rockford Women's Golf Classic champion, added state champion to her resume, winning the AA individual girls title. The A girls tournament placed Eastland eighth and Byron ninth as teams. Rockford Lutheran's Natalie Hooper and Eastland's Karissa Freidag placed in the Top 20 individually.
