The Rockford Continental 10-and-under baseball team, along with the Poplar Grove Power 10U baseball club, participated in the American Amateur Baseball Congress Willie Mays World Series on Saturday, hosted by the Rockford Boys and Girls Club.
Rockford and Poplar Grove were two of the teams that received bids to the championship tournament that featured youth teams from Puerto Rico, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Michigan.
"These kids are enjoying it. It's awesome for the little local neighborhoods, and it's awesome for our program. Our program has come a long way in five years and these kids have worked very hard to be here," said Poplar Grove head coach Kevin Alderman.
"It's really emotional. I was so excited when we qualified for the World Series, I knew it was here," said Rockford head coach Chris Johnson, who is a Boylan grad and played in the event when it was last hosted by the Forest City in the 1980's. "We really fought hard to qualify for this. I'm really proud of the kids we have on this ballclub."
