Rockford Police are getting to know the community one block party at a time. The department is teaming up with the united way for Strong Neighborhoods Days.
These block parties have evolved off the former Cops on the Block from previous summers. Thursday, officers took over a section of Irving Road and invited neighbors to join them. Officers say they look forward to the chance to get to know their community on a positive level.
They get a chance to interact with some of the officers who work the area and have a bite to eat with us it's a way for helping to promote community and police relations so the interaction not always us coming to a call or having to deal with stuff when there's a crisis or some other problem," says Lt. John Eau Claire.
The event also featured free food from Zammutos, a bomb-robot demonstration, and tours of the mobile command center.
