UPDATE: Rockford police release more information on the toddler hit by a car Friday evening.
Investigators say the victim, a 22-month-old boy was hit by a car while he was in the roadway in the 1700 block of Ashland Avenue. The suspect vehicle, described as an older, black Chevrolet Avalanche with a gray bed cover, shiny rims and tinted windows, took off after hitting the boy, police say.
The young boy was brought to a local hospital. He's being treated for serious injuries, according to investigators. The man driving the Avalanche is described as about 20 years old with a short afro hairstyle.
This incident is still under investigation.

Rockford police say a child is in the hospital after a hit and run.
It happened around 7 p.m. Friday on Ashland Avenue, near N. Central Avenue. Police interviewed a group of kids who claimed to have witnessed the incident. Investigators are looking for a black Chevy Avalanche with a gray truck bed cover and tinted windows that hit a child and took off. Police do not have information on the severity of the child's injuries. The child was transported to a local hospital.
