The River District Association is kicking off "Shop the Blocks," a 3-day effort to draw the public to Rockford's downtown area.
This Friday will be the first day of the event, but it will continue on Aug. 8 and Sept. 5. Retailers and restaurants will offer sidewalk sales and dining areas for the public to enjoy.
The event also features interactive 'parklets', spaces for visitors to relax, talk, and play games such as bags, chess or checkers.
The River District Association organized the event in collaboration with The Element Rockford and The City of Rockford-Community and Economic Development to energize growing downtown business.
Todd Cagnoni, director of the Community and Economic Development Department for the City of Rockford, says he appreciates the chance to partner for events like "Shop the Blocks".
"This is an excellent opportunity to support the businesses in the area while testing some of the tactical efforts of the Downtown Implementation Plan," Cagnoni said.
The Downtown Implementation Plan aims to increase popularity of the downtown area of Rockford to increase commerce to businesses in the area.
"Shop the Blocks" will take place on E. State Street spanning from the river to 3rd Street.
Hours of the event are 3:00-9:00 p.m. on July 3rd, and 12:00-9:00 p.m. on August 8th and September 5th.
