The Texas Rangers designated Boylan alum Jake Smolinski for assignment this afternoon prior to their series opener with the Chicago White Sox at US Cellular Field.
Smolinski has appeared in 35 games this season for the Rangers, batting .133 with a home run and a double. He has thrived in Triple-A, posting a 1.280 on-base plus slugging statistic this year. The move was made after the team recalled Ryan Rua from the 60-day disabled list.
The White Sox will host the Stanley Cup and the Chicago Blackhawks prior to Sunday's matinee on the South Side.
