Illinois has approved 2,500 medical marijuana patients
Wednesday, June 3, 2015 1:56 PM EDT
By The Associated Press
CHICAGO (AP) -
Illinois sent about 200 approval letters in May to patients who qualify for the new medical marijuana program, but the pace of approvals and applications has slowed.
The Illinois Department of Public Health released the update Wednesday. The department has issued about 2,500 approval letters to qualifying marijuana patients since September.
The health department says about 21,800 people have logged onto the program's patient application website. Of those, about 3,100 have submitted an application -- just 100 more than last month.
The new tally reflects a slowing pace of approvals and applications.
Program supporters have planned a daylong event Saturday in Chicago that aims to answer questions for patients who've been on the fence.
Americans for Safe Access-Illinois and the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Chicago are co-hosting the event.
