Bears release McDonald after domestic violence arrest

Chicago Bears defensive end Ray McDonald, who was signed by the team as a free agent this offseason, has been arrested in California and charged with misdemeanor domestic violence and child endangerment, according to the Santa Clara Police Department.

McDonald was arrested at 7 a.m. on Memorial Day.

The team released McDonald on Monday afternoon after he signed a one-year, non-guaranteed deal in March with Chicago.

General manager Ryan Pace said in a statement that the team "believes in second chances, but when we signed Ray we were very clear what our expectations were if he was to remain a Bear. He was not able to meet the standard and the decision was made to release him."

McDonald's former team, the San Francisco 49ers, released McDonald in December. He was previously arrested for domestic violence last season, but was not subjected to NFL personal conduct policy punishment.
