Saturday Sports - Baseball and Softball Regionals, Soccer Sectionals

It was a busy Saturday in the Stateline region on May 23 as teams all over the area competed for regional and sectional championships in spring sports playoffs.

Forreston, which has already added a state football title and basketball state appearance to their 2015 trophy case, won the 2A regional championship against Stillman Valley in Oregon, a 3-0 shutout as Nathan Schneiderman threw a complete game for the Cardinals. They advance to the Byron sectionals next week, playing Aurora Christian.

Stillman Valley didn't come up completely empty-handed - the Lady Cardinals softball team wrapped up a regional four-peat, defeating Byron 4-0 in the Byron 2A regional championship game. Senior Payton Abbott threw eleven strikeouts in the complete game effort. Stillman Valley advances to the Morrison sectional, and will play Hall from Spring Valley.

1A baseball featured a local rivalry renewed as Dakota defeated Aquin 8-6 to win the regional title on their home field. The Indians rallied for the come-from-behind win, and advance to sectionals against River Ridge.

1A softball also had a hint of Dakota burgundy as the Lady Indians battled Pearl City in the Pecatonica 1A regional title game. The Lady Wolves beat Dakota 5-1, and next face Sterling Newman Central Catholic in sectionals.

The small school girls soccer playoffs brought Lee County north to Ogle County on Saturday. Dixon drew Alleman from Rock Island in the 1A Byron sectional championship game with a spot in the DeKalb Super-Sectional on the line. Dixon fought back to tie the game 2-2 in the second half, but lost 3-2 in overtime.
