Two men face charges after passing handgun near children

Two men face charges after passing a handgun between them near children. 

On Sunday afternoon, police were called to Andrews Park at 850 N. Central Ave. for a report of two men passing a handgun between them. A resident who witnessed the event called police and gave a detailed clothing description and advised that both men were in the park.

When officers arrived, they spotted 24-year-old Anthony Johnson of Rockford and 24-year-old Kenneth Jones of Rockford on the basketball court surrounded by several children under the age of 10. Officers approached the men and discovered that one of them had a .22 caliber handgun in his pants pocket.

Police took both men into custody. Both Johnson and Jones have been charged with Aggravated Unlawful Use of Weapon, Unlawful Use of Weapons by a Felon and Violation of the Firearm Owner's Identification Card Act (No FOID). Jones faces an additional charge of Violation of the Cannabis Control Act.
