Local high school students get a lesson in impaired driving during prom season
ROCKFORD (WREX) -
Prom season is in full swing and first responders are making sure teens get a reality check of what can happen when they're not paying attention to the road.
The Rockford Fire Department set up a mock car crash at Auburn High School on Thursday. The students acted out a scene as if they were coming home from the prom. The coroner and police department spoke to the students about the potential deadly consequences of impaired driving like texting or drinking and driving.
"It's very important that these kids understand the consequences of drinking and driving at prom, and/or graduation, and then we kind of make it as realistic for them as we can," said Winnebago County Coroner Sue Fiduccia.
The fire department was also joined by the Rockford Police Department and Lifeline. Auburn High School's prom is set for May 9.
