FAIRDALE, Ill. (WREX) -
A Stillman Valley man has been arrested for looting in Fairdale, according to the Dekalb County Sheriff's Office.
Richard Burtch is charged with one count of looting and one count of attempted looting after he was caught loading his vehicle with donated items intended for the victims of the devastating April 9 tornado, according to the sheriff's office.
During an investigation at Burtch's Stillman Valley residence, deputies along with the Ogle County Sheriff's Office discovered approximately 35 brand new tubs still in boxes with an additional eight that had been filled with other donated items such as medicine, toiletries and food. Also located were three wheel barrows, over a dozen rakes, shovels and brooms.
The sheriff's office says Burtch had initially been coming to Fairdale to help a family member clean up their house that had been destroyed during the tornado, but continued coming back so he could gather more supplies for himself.
Burtch is being held on a $50,000 bond. All supplies were collected and returned back to the Village of Fairdale residents.
