Rockford Police release names of officers involved in recent shooting

ROCKFORD (WREX) - The Rockford Police Department has released the names of the police officers involved in a shooting.

On March 30, investigators said a Rockford officer on patrol heard gun shots fired near Horsman and Whitman Streets.

Another police officer in a squad car saw a man later identified as Jason Schweig walking near that area with a rifle.  The officers reportedly asked him to drop his weapon, but he pointed it at them, and the officers fired back.

Schweig has hit by one of the officer's bullets in the leg.   He was treated and released from the hospital after the incident.

Police now report the officers involved in the shooting were Officer Andrew Seale, a 7 year veteran of the force, and Officer Nicholas Alejo, Jr., who has been with the department for one year.

Both officers are on administrative duty pending the outcome of the Winnebago Boone County Integrity Task Force's investigation.

Schweig is charged with attempted murder and unlawful use of a weapon by a gang member.
