It's easy for students to see the work that goes in to teaching, firefighting and policing. But that's not the case with engineering.
That's where the IDOT Engineering Academy comes in.
This week, students at Jefferson High School will get an in-depth look at what it means to be an engineer.
Students will design and race their own cars using magnets, and they'll be introduced to highway, rail and city planning.
"A lot of people who are not exposed do not have a good understanding of what it is that we do in this industry. And in order to get people interested before they get into college, a lot of the time you have to expose them to it," says Tom Okite of Artisan Consulting Engineers.
The week-long academy ends Friday with a field trip to IDOT headquarters in Dixon.
