UPDATE: Lanes reopen on I-39/90 after chemical spill near Janesville

JANESVILLE (WREX) -

As of 11:50 p.m. Janesville police say all westbound lanes on I-39/90 are now open. The traffic accident on I-39/90 Westbound near the 177 Mile Marker has been cleared from the roadway. 

However, the chemical spill is still causing I-39/90 Westbound to be rerouted near mile marker 173. Westbound traffic on the Interstate is closed at the East Racine St. exit at mile marker 175. The Interstate reopens at the 172 US 14 ramp. 

All southbound/eastbound traffic is still open at this time. Traffic is currently re-routed through Janesville east on SH 11 to US 14. Please avoid this area and expect delays for several more hours.


One lane on Interstate 39/90 near Janesville is reopened after a chemical spill shut down the area for hours. 

The incident closed down westbound lanes of the major highway at mile marker 173 after a semi-tractor trailer struck another semi-tractor trailer that was transporting a variety of swimming pool type chemicals.

Traffic was shut down at approximately 2:15 a.m. Homes at Green Valley Drive and Randolph Road were later evacuated. 

There were no injuries as a result of the accident, however, the rear end of the truck was damaged and the various chemicals were spilled and leaked. 



Parts of Interstate 39/90 are closed and homes have been evacuated after a chemical spill near Janesville.

Officials are on the scene at mile marker 173 where a semi truck side-swiped another semi-truck. One of the trucks was transporting a variety of swimming pool type materials. 

Westbound traffic on the Interstate is closed at the East Racine Street exit at mile marker 175. The Interstate reopens at the 172 US 14 ramp. 

About a dozen homes have been evacuated on Green Valley Drive and Randolph Road, according to the police department.

All southbound/eastbound traffic is still open at this time. Traffic is currently re-routed through Janesville east on SH 11 to US 14.

Drivers should avoid this area and expect delays for several more hours.

Janesville Police, Janesville Fire Department Hazmat team, Type II Hazmat team from Madison Fire Department and Wisconsin State Patrol are responding.
