The Rock Valley College Lady Golden Eagles basketball team won the NJCAA national championship on Saturday, defeating Roxbury 80-76 in overtime. Rockford Lutheran alum Samantha Rundblade hit the game-tying three late in regulation to force the extra period. It's the third national title in four years for Misty Opat's team.
Craig Doty and the men's team fell just short of their pursuit of a repeat, losing to Richland 67-64 in the NJCAA men's national title game. They still made history in 2015, setting the program record for wins in a single season with 31, against 4 losses.
The high school hardwood featured Forreston wrapping up their season in Peoria in the 1-A consolation game. The Cardinals lost to Ridgeview 53-35, ending their playoff run with a 26-7 record on the season and the 4th place trophy, just a few months after winning the 1-A state championship in football.
