UPDATE: Man stabbed inside downtown library during argument, library still open

ROCKFORD (WREX) - UPDATE: The Community Relations Officer for the Rockford Public Library released the following statement regarding the stabbing.

"The stabbing seems to be the result of an ongoing argument between two individuals," said Deborah Fortune.  "They seemingly knew each other before they stepped foot in the library. Their argument apparently escalated while they were in the men's room on the second floor.  The library is open as this was not a random action, but an argument between two individuals who knew one another.  This could have happened anywhere in the city.  The library we will be open tomorrow."

Rockford Police are investigating a stabbing inside the downtown public library.

Officers said around 3:45 p.m. they were called about the stabbing at the library located at 215 N. Wyman Street.

Responding officers said a victim was found on the floor in the second floor bathroom after being stabbed multiple times.

Officers said the victim is in his 30s. He was taken to the hospital where he is listed in serious condition.

Rockford Police are interviewing witnesses. Some told police they saw the knife-wielding man leave the library in pickup truck.
