Slick roads send dozens of drivers into ditches

ROCKFORD (WREX) - It was slippery out there on the roads Tuesday.

Illinois State Police reported dozens of drivers calling to report they were stuck in ditches.

In District 16, which covers Winnebago, Boone, Jo Daviess and Stephenson Counties, Sgt. Richard Strain said there were two dozens calls for drivers stuck in ditches as of 2 p.m.  Strain also said troopers responded to two weather-related wrecks involving property damage.

One driver in Winnebago County had to be helped by first responders when their car slid off the side of U.S. 20 right before the Meridian Road exit.  The car went down a steep embankment but came to a halt before it reached a small pond below.

A two truck driver pulled the car to safe ground.  The driver was okay, according to crews on the scene.

A sergeant in Illinois State Police District 1, which covers Carroll, Lee, Ogle and Whiteside Counties, said there were three weather related wrecks on Interstates 39 and 88 as well as another highway.
