Dakota's special homecoming, #DomStrong hosts a fundraiser

STEPHENSON COUNTY (WREX) - The Dakota Indians capped another successful weekend at the dual team state finals in Bloomington, bringing another 1A championship to the high school's already packed trophy case. The program's four seniors - Carver James, J.J. Wolfe, Printice Walls, and Dillon Swift - leave behind a team that boasts three straight state titles. Despite all the success, head coach Pete Alber stressed the importance of high character within the walls of the wrestling room.

"We want to build champions on the mat but we want to build champions in life. We're going to continue to create God-fearing, law-abiding citizens that are assets in their community, that's our real goal."

Stephenson County also delivered some positive local news, as the #DomStrong movement continues to trend upward. Aquin senior Dominic DeMichele learned just before Christmas last December that his Hodgkin's lymphoma, originally diagnosed in the Fall, was in remission, and this past weekend, he and his family hosted a fundraiser in Freeport. All funds will go towards current and future medical expenses, and it was overwhelming for Dom's family to see the outpouring of support from the community.

"It's amazing actually seeing everyone physically come out and see me, prior to this, I would read the letters but it never really hits you how many people are supporting you until you see everyone's faces."
