Taylor Park Elementary's Amber Williams is special to many in Freeport.
So many in fact, that she was nominated to be 13 News' Teacher of the Week by someone outside of the school district.
"She believes that if I believe in you, I will teach you to believe in yourself," says Toni Holmes.
Principal Holmes says that about Mrs. Williams a third grade teacher at Taylor Park. She was nominated by the Director of Downtown Development in Freeport. One reason is because she is teaching her students to give back to their community.
"Our children, at this age, are so focused on themselves," Mrs. Williams says. "It's a transitional stage, so I want them to know that anything that they do in the community will ultimately come back on them."
It all started with what they call "Jeans for a Cause."
"We do a little vote and see what organization the students are interested in," says Principal Holmes.
Then each student donates a dollar to get a chance to wear jeans instead of their uniforms. This year the third graders are donating their share to the city for their spring flower plantings.
"When they give back...it feels good to give back," Mrs. Williams says. "That just not only doing the physical action of it but the feelings they get when they give back."
Teaching them that it's not only important to the people they are helping but to them as well.
