Dyslexia affects 1 out of every 5 people, and a facility in Freeport is working to help children and their families overcome this condition. The Children's Dyslexia Center of Northwestern Illinois is one of 52 centers funded by Scottish Rite Charities. They tutor children with dyslexia and other learning disabilities. Many parents have seen a change in their kids reading and writing abilities after several visits. "His confidence has really been boosted since he came to the center. We'll be driving around town and he is noticing signs and he's reading things," says parent Jamie Elliot. The free tutoring the center provides is possible through volunteers and donations. It costs an estimated $5,000 to tutor a child for one year.
