Saturday offered a busy sports schedule in our region, complete with bowling and wrestling regionals, AHL hockey, and NIC-10 basketball.
Lutheran's Dakotah Hazlewood advanced to sectionals as the individual regional champion at Viking Lanes in South Beloit, while four NIC-10 teams claimed the advancing spots to next week's sectionals at Don Carter Lanes. Belvidere North, Harlem, Guilford, and Hononegah will compete for a spot at the state final at the Cherry Bowl.
Dakota will send nine wrestlers to the 1A sectionals after a successful day on the mat in their home regional on Saturday. Printice Walls stole the show for the Indians, coming from behind late in the third round to tie Byron's Nolan Baker, 3-3. Walls won in overtime in a 5-3 decision. Defending state champions JJ Wolfe and Carver James also advance for Dakota.
The Rockford IceHogs played before a sold-out BMO Harris Bank Center, but couldn't even the Milwaukee Admirals during their home-and-home, losing 7-5.
Wrapping up the night, Freeport defeated Harlem 61-51 at home as the team honored the 100-year anniversary of the 1915 state championship team. We will have a full report on the ceremony during next week's "Where You Live" broadcast from the Freeport Art Museum as we honor Stephenson County.
