BYRON (WREX) -
The Northern Illinois division of the Special Olympics brought together dozens of local athletes to Byron High School for a great Sunday of basketball.
Teams participated in a tournament, featuring players ranging in age from grade school to 40 and 50-year-olds. It was a memorable day that featured a level playing field for all involved.
"They're limited at what they do in their normal daily life, so this gives them a little bit of extra attention, and if you really watch the people participating here, they don't think they have limitations to what they can do," said RPS 205 Special Olympics coach Tom DeRidder. "They're open, honest, and they just love to participate. Medals are great, but they just like the fact that they're here."
