The whole incident started around 6 p.m. Friday night. The Winnebago County Sheriff's Office received a call after someone reported hearing gunshots on a neighborhood street.
Deputies responded to the 4200 block of Crestview Drive, which is a Winnebago County address, where they believe the incident took place in front of the homes on the street.
While deputies were there, Schultz said the shooting victim called 911 and told Rockford Police he was driven to the Highcrest Shopping Centre parking lot after the incident.
Rockford Police officers found the 24-year-old gunshot victim in a car, according to Schultz. The retail center is right around the corner from the initial shooting occurred.
The man was taken to the hospital with injuries said to be non-life-threatening.
The victim was not by himself in the Ford Taurus, according to Schultz. There were two others who were in the car with him that are being interviewed about the incident.
"Detectives have a lead on a suspect, but do not have any places to actively look for that person," said Schultz. "I don't think the public is in danger at this point."
The Winnebago County Sheriff's Office is taking the lead on the investigation since the shooting happened in the county.
Sheriff's deputies and Rockford Police officers were still at the scene as of Friday at 9 p.m.
