Ground has been broken and fences have been put up around the area where a Save-A-Lot grocery store will go on Rockford's west side.
The store will be located on West State Street and Central Avenue.
The grocery store had Rockford aldermen clashing this past fall over concerns of quality and quantity. The Save-A-Lot was pitched as a solution to the food desert in that side of the city, but 13th Ward Alderman Linda McNeely disagreed with the plan. She was in favor of bringing a Meijer grocery store to the area.
However, zoning was approved by the City Council in September by an 11-1 vote.
