It was a special celebration at one local middle school as one of its teachers who served overseas returned home. "I think we need to say a big welcome back Mr. Murphy, right! Welcome back!" said Sen. Steve Stadelman, D - 34th District. Flinn Middle School students were screaming for joy as their teacher Major Craig Murphy returned from his third deployment to Afghanistan. Murphy has been in the Army Reserve for 23 years and has also worked as an RPS 205 teacher for the past 14 years. Flinn staff, students and Major Murphy's family all gathered this afternoon to welcome home their beloved teacher and thank him for his service. "It's fantastic, something more than I ever expected. I just expected to come back to work, go back to teaching. What the kids and principal put together, it's pretty fantastic," Major Murphy said. Murphy says he plans to retire from the military in a couple years and continue teaching.
