'Hectic' election day seeing few problems at polls in Winnebago County
Tuesday, November 4, 2014 1:53 PM EST
By Sean Muserallo
Winnebago County polling precincts are busy on this Election Day.
County Clerk Margie Mullins said several poll workers requested more voting booths because the demand was so high in the morning.
Mullins said there has been a steady stream of voters either registered at the clerk's office to vote today or change their address. She estimated 15-20 voters an hour are coming in to do this.
"It's a hectic day," said Mullins. "It's running smooth, but it's very hectic."
Mullins said she took four more voting booths to the National Guard Armory already. She took an additional five booths to the Rock Valley Baptist Church voting location.
Early and absentee voting has been a record high in Winnebago County this election, according to Mullins. She said nearly 2,000 people voted early. Those votes will be counted immediately at 7 p.m.
Mullins said absentee ballots cannot be opened until 7 p.m. She said there is a process to tabulating each vote.
"It could be 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. before we have everything done with the absentee ballots," said Mullins.
