Rockton School district officials and teachers still at odds

ROCKTON (WREX) - After months of negotiations, Rockton school district teachers have yet to come to a contract agreement with the district.

They want more money, but district officials say they can't afford it.

Rockton teachers picket Wednesday night as a last ditch effort to show the district they mean business.

Our students our kids their future is the message picketers want to get across to the school district.

An agreement is yet to be made between both parties.

As the budget stands right now, district officials say they will run out of money in the next six to seven years.

Teachers are looking for a two year deal.

In it, they are looking for a half percent increase for next year and a two percent increase the year after that.

The district says these salary increases would make it run out of money even quicker.

In fact, the financial situation bad enough, the district says it may have to lay off more people.

Two years ago, the district laid off 25 employees, including 18 teachers.

The district and teachers will meet with a federal mediator next Tuesday, October 28th.
