WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WREX) -
Winnebago County officials continue to fine tune their plans to move the coroner's office out of the public service building.
Here are the current options.
1. Move both the coroner's offices and the morgue into a funeral home not in use. This option would need renovations to work, like a larger cooling room and freezer.
2. Move the offices to the Janet Wattles building and renovate the basement into a morgue. That would force them to find a temporary location to store bodies.
3.Keep the morgue where it is in the basement of the PSB, but update it once the demolition is over. The coroner's offices would be nearby in the Janet Wattles building.
"We are their last voice," Winnebago County Coroner, Sue Fiduccia said. "We are the ones that are going to determine their cause of death, but then also we are their last voice, so we need to take care of them with whatever dignity we can."
It is currently costing the county roughly 1.5 million dollars each year to occupy the public safety building.
