A public health hazard — that's what officials are calling the former Rockton paper mill.
The Sonoco products company plant closed in 2008. Village trustees declared it in violation of city codes.
The property has a list of 81 violations ranging from overgrown weeds to soil contamination.
Last year the Environmental Protection Agency collected 17 soil samples and three ground water samples from the site. Those samples showed high concentrations of mercury, lead and other dangerous chemicals.
The village attorney says it's up to Sonoco to respond accordingly.
