Waukegan teachers plan to strike amid negotiations

WAUKEGAN, Ill. (AP) — Teachers in Waukegan are preparing to strike after hours of last-minute contract negotiations with the school district.
The teachers union president tells WMAQ-TV that teachers will be on strike starting at 7 a.m. Thursday at all of the approximately 25 campuses in Waukegan. She says some of the 1,200 picketers will be at each location.
District 60 leaders and the union were in negotiations throughout the day Wednesday. Both sides said they hoped a strike could be avoided before the Thursday deadline.
Teachers are calling for a salary increase over three years. The district has said it's offering a cost-of-living increase.
A district spokesman says the Waukegan Park District will offer childcare if there is a strike. The Boys and Girls Club and the Waukegan Public Library will offer programming for members.
