Teachers harvest young minds. And today, they received a symbolic gesture to recognize the fruits of their labor.
The Golden Apple Foundation celebrates its 29th year of honoring local educators for excellence in the classroom.
Volunteers from across the area, including 13 News' Christie Battista, helped to deliver 6,500 golden delicious apples, thank you cards and teacher nomination forms in many schools in Winnebago and Boone counties this morning.
"They've really been preparing since mid-summer for this school year and they're probably some of the most dedicated instructors in teh city, so we're very happy and proud of them," says Michael Lane, CEO of Galapagos Charter Schools.
Nominations for the Golden Apple Teacher Awards will be accepted through Oct. 20.
